In the 1950s and ’60s, ornithologists Donald and Marian McChesney used this Land Rover as a mobile recording studio across Africa — capturing bird calls and songs that became a foundational collection at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. They worked alongside National Geographic. Every time you use a phone app to identify a bird song, you’re following a trail they blazed from this exact vehicle.
They bought it new in Nairobi in 1957. It crossed continents. It came home to North Carolina. It went back to Africa. Then it went quiet — until restoration pro Jim Cirbus brought it all the way back.

It's still hard to believe we won! Barb and I had a wonderful time meeting everyone when we picked up our new Winnebago.
